One of my firm’s clients—the only one we have ever had to “let go”—forced its managers into a regular series of terrifying meetings informally dubbed “Stump the Chump.” When I asked the CEO what his biggest issue was, he said, “Winning the hearts and minds of our employees.” The senior leaders did not choose to see the obvious disconnection between their priorities and their goal.

HPE leaders praise publicly and criticize privately. Many leaders—and many parents—do the opposite, and it is an ethical and performance failure. Just because someone has the power to take cheap shots doesn’t mean that he or she should. Doing so is cowardly, rude, destructive, unproductive—and wrong.
